The Hautes Chaumes

A part of these high-altitude meadows located at the top of the highest Vosges ridges (above 1,250 m to 1,300 m) corresponds to natural formations. They are called primary stubbles. At this mid-mountain altitude, they form a unique environment in Europe. This flora is original because of the presence of subalpine plant species (great yellow gentian, arnica, Alpine anemone, mountain pansy, Leontodon pyrenaicus...) which, from the postglacial period onwards, have found shelter at the top of the Vosges mountain. In places, the grassy aspect disappears in favour of a low heath formed by/ composed of different shrubby species: common/ European blueberry, lowbush blueberry, foxberry, scotch heather, hairy greenweed...
